If this is your first time checking out Farewell North, basically it’s a game about restoring color to the world. In this video we’ll look at how I’ve made the wildlife of the game more interactive by combining them with the idea of lanterns from the previous devlog. However, I need your help to figure out how this should work exactly, as there are number of challenges to this mechanic!

One of the biggest improvements the last month, and one I’m very excited about, is that John Konsolakis has joined the project as the composer. John has some great ideas for how we can kick the audio up a few notches, but more on that in the future.

For now you can check out John’s existing work on Spotify:

The last month wasn’t the most productive, as I seemed to hit a few roadblocks. I was supposed to be working on the monster design, but just couldn’t get properly inspired to work on it, and what I did work on wasn’t turning out as I had hoped. Instead I decided to spend time polishing some of the existing functionality.

One of the main pieces of work that’s shown in the devlog is the idea of interactive wildlife. Rather than the stationary braziers from the last video, I’ve replaced them with the idea of using the birds and fauna to be the temporary color restoration beacons. This fits better with the idea of the color restoration representing her emotional state, because who’s uplifted by lanterns anyways?

With the wildlife I’m able to have more movement in the level design, and different animals can have unique behaviours. This does present some challenges though, in particular how to handle activating a group of animals such as a flock of birds. In the devlog I pose some questions and design challenges I’m working through, and I hope that you can help me work out a good solution!

So, please share your ideas down below! You’ve all provided so many great ideas and suggestions for improvements across the board, so I’m really keen to see what you have to say about this one!

I hope you enjoy the video, let me know what you think of all the new improvements and share your suggestions in the comments. Don’t forget to like, subscribe and of course, wishlist the game on Steam! Wishlisting lets Steam know that there’s an audience for the game, and it helps to ensure the game gets a little visibility when it eventually launches, so it really helps us indie devs a lot!

Farewell North is my personal passion project, an open world adventure game about restoring color to a dark and desolate archipelago where all color and life has left. You play as a collie working alongside your human companion to explore, solve puzzles, evade monsters, and restore color to the islands.
